Protection

This display has been added to the Museum after frequent requests from our visitors.

We show how magic has been and still is used to protect houses and everyday objects.

Tying a Hag Stone (a stone with a natural hole) to a key will protect it from loss and secure the house to which it belongs.

Nailing a horseshoe to a front door will protect the household from ill fortune.

Dead cats were sometimes used in the walls of buildings, as an effective charm to deter rats and mice.

Poppet

Witchball

A witchball

A string of rowan berries hung on the inside of a door makes a powerful protection charm, as does a carved witch post incorporated within the fireplace or door frame.

Witch balls are powerful reflectors of evil and were adopted into the Christian tradition to decorate Christmas trees.

Mirrors positioned behind doors can prevent evil entering.

A horse's skull suspended in a barn will protect the building and its occupants.
