The Richel Collection

A Richel collection drawing

One of the thousands of drawings from the Richel collection now held in the museum archives.

In March 2000 the museum inherited one of the worlds best collections of ritual/sex magic artifacts. The legacy was from a Dutch collector named Bob Richel who had himself inherited much of the collection from his father-in-law Mr Eldermans. Eldermans had been a Magister of the Argenteum Astrum (Silver Star) or A∴A∴, an occult group founded by Aleister Crowley in 1909 using a name borrowed from an offshoot of an existing magical order, The Golden Dawn.

We believe that Richel and Eldermans were both members of another occult group known as the M∴M∴ based in The Hague and Lieden

Whilst we know little about many of the objects in the collection, the quality of their construction is excellent.

Most of the collection has been catalogued at some time as if it were once in a private museum. Unfortunately the original index was disposed of when Eldermans died.

A large number of the artifacts in the collection represent male and female sex organs. Sex obviously played an important part in the rituals of this group as it does in many magical societies.

Carved wooden hands

There are several carved wooden hands in the Richel collection.
